Fire fixes: five quick answers

Live fire is simple once you know a few tricks. Here are the questions new owners ask most, with the fix for each.

Food is sticking

The plate isn't hot enough yet, or it needs more seasoning. Give it the full 25–30 minutes, add a little oil, and let food release on its own before you move it.

The fire won't catch

The wood is probably damp or too big. Use dry wood, start with small pieces and kindling, and open the air vent fully while lighting.

There are rust spots on the plate

It's surface rust. Heat the plate, scrape it off, wipe on a thin coat of oil, and you're back to normal.

Too much smoke

Usually wet or green wood. Switch to dry hardwood or lump charcoal and give the fire more air.

Cooking in cold or wind

Allow a little more heat-up time, keep the fire centered, and lean on the inner plate. Winter is a great time for the fire itself.
